Meet Aimee Pons-Caban

Aimee Pons-Caban is a Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)CM. She has a wide medical experience from clinical to reference and research laboratory. Aimee is currently our Clinical Laboratory Director and Vice-President Clinical Affairs at Phycinity PLLC.

She completed her bachelor degree in Science (General Sciences) in the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. During her bachelor degree, she was accepted to the McNair Program and developed the following research experience:

“TOXIC METAL DETERMINATION IN AMEIVA EXSUL AND ITS RELATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION” Advisor: Lizette Santos, Ph.D. Ronald E. McNair Program Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, Ponce, P.R.

Aimee has always been interested in a medical related career and took the decision to become a Medical Technologist. She completed her studies and became board certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)CM after finalizing studies at the School of Medical Technology Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico

Aimee always had the idea of having her own clinical laboratory and be a Laboratory Director. For that reason, she applied and was accepted to the Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science at the University of Puerto Rico. Her Master degree thesis was:

“IDENTIFICATION OF MUTATIONS (SNPS) THAT REGULATE THE EXPRESSIONS OF CANDIDATE GENES FOR DETECTION OF ENDOMETRIOSIS” Advisor: Idhaliz Flores, Ph.D. Ponce School of Medicine, Ponce, P.R.

After graduation, she continued working as a Medical Technologist in several hospitals and reference laboratory. In addition, she has also been appointed as a research assistant and laboratory supervisor in the Tumor Biology Laboratory in the University of Puerto Rico. She was the author of some research publications such as:

“HEAD AND NECK CANCER IN PUERTO RICANS: CLINICAL, GENETICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS” Advisor: Adriana Baez, Ph.D. University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus, San Juan, P.R.

“EPIGENETIC PROFILE OF PEDIATRIC ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA”, Advisor: Omar L. Caban, M.D. University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus, San Juan, P.R.

Finally, she was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Puerto Rico. In this work she gained more experience about research and clinical trials in the pediatric population.

Aimee was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. As a military wife, she has accompanied her husband through multiple tours and states. She is an avid NBA fan and die hard San Antonio Spurs fan. She now lives in North Carolina with her husband, her son and her twin daughters. In her free time, she loves homeschooling her 3 children, make beautiful hair bows and cooking Puerto Rican food.
